  • Introduce:Strother Martin was an American character actor famed for his distinctive voice, sharp delivery, and ability to inhabit colorful, often morally dubious roles in Westerns and dramas. Born in Indianapolis, Indiana, Martin was an accomplished swimmer in his youth, winning the National Junior Springboard Diving Championship and even training for Olympic competition before World War II intervened. After serving in the U.S. Navy, he pursued acting, breaking into Hollywood via minor roles in the early 1950s. He became a familiar face in films such as Cool Hand Luke (1967), in which his line “What we’ve got here is failure to communicate” became iconic, as well as in The Wild Bunch (1969), Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid (1969), and numerous John Wayne and Paul Newman collaborations. Often cast as a villain, con man, or eccentric sidekick, Martin elevated supporting roles through idiosyncratic gestures and memorable delivery. On television, he appeared in Bonanza, Gunsmoke, and The Twilight Zone. He died on August 1, 1980, but remains an enduring figure in American cinema, remembered for adding depth, humor, and humanity to archetypal character roles.
