Carl Betz

Carl Betz was an American actor best known for his dignified, steady portrayals on television during the 1950s and 1960s. Raised in Pennsylvania, Betz showed early interest in performing arts, studying drama at Carnegie Institute of Technology (now Carnegie Mellon University) before serving in the U.S. Army during World War II. He gained national recognition for his role as Dr. Alex Stone, the loving father on The Donna Reed Show (1958–1966), where his calm authority and warmth contributed to the program’s enduring appeal. Betz later transitioned to more dramatic roles, most notably as defense attorney Clinton Judd in Judd, for the Defense (1967–1969), a performance that earned him an Emmy Award for Outstanding Continued Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role. Throughout his career, he also appeared on stage and in guest roles on series such as Perry Mason, Mission: Impossible, and The Love Boat.
